I painted this work the day after an unpleasant experience that had prompted me to do some uncomfortable processing using a muddy collection of colors.

"Peaceful Mountain" portrays the opposite feeling from what I had the day before. Instead of feeling constricted, I felt positive and expansive.

Even though I was starting out simply with a tube of mid purple and a mid blue with white, and just laying on the paint any which way, I soon saw the effect of something like snow on mountains. So I added only a few more bold white strokes and the effect became unmistakable.

Now instead of a wide band of purple, the steep grandeur of a mountain slope emerged.

Beyond the swaths of color, you can see steep mountain ranges and something that might be a hill at the bottom. Or it might be a large body of water. You decide. White highlights there might be surf, or might be more snow. Together with aqua, it really could feel like waves.

I find this kind of ambiguity very intriguing and quite welcome.

What other feelings besides peacefulness occur to you?
