"Avalanche" is painted on an 11x14" Canvas with Acrylic paint, in Portrait orientation.

The colors used in this painting include shades of deep blue and purple with white and hints of lavender.

This work is available as Fine Art Giclee Reproductions on Paper or Canvas.

"Avalanche" has a distinctly steep, snowy mountain look to it, with a raw visceral feeling. Painted with broad, sweeping strokes, it gives a strong sense of energetic movement. Even though most would say, "We're in the mountains" (or even near the sea), it is still a bit on the abstract or impressionistic side.

The story behind this work is that prior to beginning it, I had been working many more hours than usual without stopping on something that was less than satisfying, with colors that were not my favorite. In addition, it was getting late, natural light was long gone and I felt weary and saturated. I had the urge to "paint something blue" to get the dingy feeling out of my soul.

So even though I was sick of painting by that late hour, I whipped out a fresh canvas and thickly slathered on the blue, purple and white from paint tubes. Then I quickly pushed it around with my paintbrush, and whoosh.. An Avalanche was born.

The effects of this composition may be different for you. I would be very interested to hear whether the cool colors give you more a feeling of calm and peace, or whether the high energy and suggestion of movement gives you a burst of productivity. Perhaps it will be a dynamic combination..!
